Where is Caloosa Quilts located?

Caloosa Quilts is located in on the Caloosahatchee River in Southwest Florida, in the small town of Alva.

What is Caloosa Quilts' turnaround time?

Caloosa Quilts knows how exciting it is to see the finished project and can't imaging having to wait 4-6 weeks; therefore, a 7 - 10 day turnaround time can be expected.

Who will be handling my quilt?

Caloosa Quilts is owned and operated by Laura Davis.  Laura will be the only person handling your quilt.  There is no work subbed out and no one brought into the shop to work.  That way, your quilt is given the individual, undivided attention it deserves and you can be assured of top quality workmanship.

How will I know if my quilt arrived at Caloosa Quilts?

As soon as your quilt arrives, you'll be notified by phone.  This will also allow us to discuss any  matters or questions concerning your quilt.

What is edge-to-edge quilting?

Edge-to-edge quilting is the use of a single quilting pattern in repetitions across and down the entire length and width of the quilt.

Why do my backing and batting have to be 5" larger than the quilt top on all sides?

Your backing and batting must be a minimum of 5" larger than your quilt top on all sides in order to allow us to attach them to the quilt machine at the top and bottom.  The sides of the quilt backing are kept taut on the machine using clamps.  The extra fabric allows us to do this without interfering with the quilting process.

Are you able to quilt out fullness and puckers?

With the use of the computer guided quilt machine, hands are freed-up to manipulate the fabric if needed.  We do not guarantee that all fullness and puckers will quilt out, but we'll do our best.  Fullness is best disguised using a meandering pattern and high loft batting.

What type of batting do you recommend?

We recommend using a 100% cotton batting for children's quilts or for a quilt that is going to be used on a bed.  While not as warm as polyester (polyester doesn't "breathe" and therefore keeps heat in), cotton "breathes" and is heavier.  For quilts that will just be used for decorative purposes,  an 80/20 cotton poly or polyester batting is recommended.  We carry Hobbs 80/20 and Warm and Natural 100% cotton.

Can I send my own batting?

Yes, you can send your own batting.  However, it may be more cost effective for you to purchase our batting by the inch and also avoid having to pay higher shipping charges when you send your quilt to us.

Do I need to provide my own backing?

Yes.  As of now, we don't carry any backing fabrics, but may in the future.

How should I prepare my quilt top for shipping?

Please be sure to go through the following check list prior to shipping your quilt.

  • Press all seams on the back of your quilt top.  If your backing has seams, they need to be pressed open.

  • Cut all loose threads from the back of the quilt top.  Threads will show through the quilt, especially dark ones!

  • Backing and batting must be at least 5" larger the the quilt top on all 4 sides.

  • Square the quilt top and backing

  • Mark the top of the quilt with a safety pin or note.

  • If Caloosa Quilts will be doing the binding, please send along 1 yard of fabric.  Any unused fabric will be returned to you.

  • Gently fold the quilt, without creasing it, and put in a box with your order form.  If you are paying by check, please include that in the box as well.

  • Mail your quilt to:

                                    Laura Davis

                                    21830 Pear Street

                                    Alva, Fl 33920

Should I baste my quilt together?

NO, there is no need to baste the quilt.  Each piece of the quilt will be attached to the machine separately.

What type of binding does Caloosa Quilts do?

We'd be more than happy to help you finish your quilt.  We machine sew the straight grain binding onto the front of the quilt and then hand sew it to the back.  We do use mitered corners.

What is the biggest size quilt you can quilt?

Caloosa Quilts is able to handle quilts up to 144" in width and there is no limit on length.

Can you quilt a T-shirt quilt?

Yes.  Be sure that you use a non-woven fusible interfacing.  Due to the "stretchy nature" of cotton knits, it is very easy for puckers to form, so to prevent puckers, Caloosa Quilts will only use a meandering pattern on these quilts.

What types of payment do you accept?

Caloosa Quilts will accept your personal check, but checks must clear before your quilt is returned.  There is a $25.00 fee for returned checks.  If you prefer to pay by credit card, let us know when you send your quilt and we will invoice you through PayPal.

What is included in the quilting charge?

The quilting charge pays for Caloosa Quilts to put the quilt on the machine and quilt it per your request.  Thread is also included unless you choose a variegated, metallic or monofilament, in which case there is a surcharge.

How will my quilt be returned to me?

When your quilt is finished, it will be folded, sealed in a bag and placed back in a box and returned to you insured for $300 via USPS.  You will also receive a call notifying you that your quilt is on its way home.
